New Year's Resolutions for the School Year

Helping your child make New Year's resolutions for the school year is a great way to make the reminder of the school year a success. Even if the start of the school year was tough, keep your child positive by putting together a list of goals to accomplish this semester.

Stay Positive

All students struggle with school at one point or another. Whether your child is struggling to keep up in a class or simply has trouble managing their time, this may affect their attitude towards school. When things get tough, most people tend to develop a negative attitude and give up. Help your child combat this negativity by resolving to keep a positive attitude this school year. It's hard to stay positive all on your own, so be sure to be there for your child when they're having a tough time. You can help them find a solution to their problems so that they can remain positive and solve their issue.

Get Organized

Resolving to get organized this year can involve many aspects of your child's school life. For example, your child may have a messy backpack and desk. This can lead to them losing important homework assignments and even carrying a heavy backpack full of unnecessary items. Help them get organized by making time to clean out their backpack together and to organize their work area. Once things are neat and organized, set time aside every week to keep up with organization goals. This will become routine for your child and help them have a more organized school year.

Stop Procrastinating

Procrastination is all too common for students, especially for older students. This bad habit can come down to a variety of issues, like not understanding the assignment or being intimidated by a large project. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to combat procrastination. To get started, identify what it is that is causing your child to procrastinate and do your best to solve it. If your child is being distracted by social media, simply ban it while they are working. If they're procrastinating because they don't understand a subject, look for solutions like after school tutoring. If one of your child's resolutions for the school year is to improve their grades or even develop better study habits, The Tutoring Center, Franklin Park NJ can help them accomplish it. Ask for Help

Admitting you need help can be a hard thing to do for many people. For students, this can be a particular challenge in a classroom setting. Students who don't understand a lesson are often hesitant to ask questions because they're embarrassed to admit they don't understand in front of their peers. This can lead to students falling behind in class and having a harder time keeping up. If this is something your child struggles with, you can get together and figure out ways for them to ask for help that they're comfortable with. They can start off asking the teacher for help after class or during breaks until they muster up the courage to raise their hand in class.

Participate in Class

Students who are shy or embarrassed to participate in class may be missing out because of their reluctance to participate. If your child wants to participate in class but is shy, help them conquer their fear of public speaking. You can enroll your child in theater classes or any extracurricular activity they choose that will help them become more comfortable with public speaking. Be patient, because participating in class may be something your child will need to work up to.

Make More Time for Reading

Reading is an important activity that we should all make time for daily, not just students. If your child is a young learner, make time to read together so that they develop a habit of reading daily. If your child is older, make reading a part of their routine by scheduling reading time after school or before bedtime.

Enjoy the School Year

After making a few resolutions that will help your child have a successful academic year, it's also important to resolve to enjoy school. This is especially important for older students who are focusing a lot of their attention on college acceptance, college entrance exams, and advanced classes. Ensure that your child has time to enjoy important school events like dances, sports games, and activities with their friends.
