Be Prepared to Take on Your Most Important Exams

The end of a semester usually means a relaxing break, but not until final exams are completed. Before you start stressing out over your exams, keep in mind that creating a plan for success and following through will make things easier. The Tutoring Center in North Brunswick Township has some tips to help you take on your exams successfully.

Create a Study Plan

Before you crack open your books and start reviewing notes, sit down and create a study plan. Ask your teacher questions about what material will be included in the exam. Take all the topics that will be included and create a study outline. By writing down what will be included in your test, you will be better able to visualize how much you need to study. Decide what areas you need to spend more time on and what areas you are quite comfortable with. Consider signing up for tutoring services for the areas you need extra help with.

Make Time to Study

Ideally, you should review your material all semester long. Since this usually doesn't happen, you will need to schedule specific study time. Take an hour or two each day to review notes and old exams leading up to your test day. By spreading out your study time over a couple weeks, you can avoid cramming. Remember that cramming doesn't work and that it tends to cause more stress and anxiety before important exams.

Create a Productive Study Space

In order to stay productive and focused as you study, do your reviewing in a distraction-free zone. Set up a study space in an area in your home where you will not be disturbed or distracted. If you are easily distracted by your cell phone or other electronic devices, keep them on silent and a distance away. Before you sit down to study, double check that you have all the necessary supplies. This will prevent you from getting up and getting distracted.

Create a Study Group

A study group can be a great test preparation tool. For some, studying with a group helps keep them on task and focused. You can share your study strategies and learn useful tips from others. By studying with a group you are also able to quiz each other and see how prepared you are.

Eat and Drink Smart While Studying

While it may sound silly, what you snack on while you study can make a different. Stick to healthy foods in order to avoid energy surges and crashes. Nuts, seeds, yogurt and blueberries can even help you stay focused on your study material. Drink plenty of water in order to stay hydrated, keep your brain working and avoid headaches and fatigue. The Night Before a Test

What you do the night before a test can greatly affect your exam results. Avoid cramming and stressing yourself out, and instead go through a quick review of your most important notes. Get to bed on time and get enough sleep. You will concentrate better during your exam if you are well rested.

Plan Your Test Day

Plan ahead in order to have a calm, stress-free test day. Set your alarm so you have enough time to go through your morning routine comfortably. Have a healthy breakfast before heading out and pack a healthy snack. Leave home with enough time to arrive early to your exam. Arriving just on time or late will likely cause you unnecessary stress.

Stay Calm During a Test

Practice simple relaxation techniques just in case you start to feel anxious during your exam. Take a break from your test and take deep breaths in and out until you feel comfortable and ready to keep going.

If You Don't Understand, Ask Questions

When you get your exam, read the instructions carefully and make sure you understand what is being asked of you. If you don't understand the directions or part of a question, ask your instructor for help. Don't be embarrassed to ask questions, and remember someone else might have the same question.

Manage Your Time

Figure out how much time you have to complete the exam and move at a proper pace. You can start by answering the questions you're sure you know the answers to and come back to the harder ones later. If you're taking a multiple choice test, use the process of elimination to cross off answers you know are incorrect. If you have extra time once you have finished, review your exam before turning it in. Review your answers and ensure that you have answered all the questions on the exam.
