Help Your Teen Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep every night is just as important the air you breathe and the food you eat. It helps promote a healthy organism as well as a healthy mind. Unfortunately, it's quite common for most high school aged teens to lose out on sleep because of academics and extracurricular activities. The Tutoring Center in Franklin Park can help you encourage your teen to develop better sleep habits that will benefit them in the long run.

How Sleep Affects Academics

Teenagers typically need about eight to ten hours of sleep every night in order to function at their best the next day. Most teens don't get even the minimum eight hours of sleep recommended. Their lack of sleep can lower their ability to learn and concentrate on tasks. It can cause less effective listening habits and may negatively affect their memory. If your teen is staying up late to study or finish assignments, they may be getting less out of their lessons. Advise your teen to get enough sleep before doing any extra studying. The added rest will be more helpful than their cups of coffee as they study.

How to Promote Better Sleep Habits

If your teen is losing lots of sleep over homework or extracurricular activities, sit down with them and discuss what changes could be made to improve the situation. Your teen might feel a lot of pressure to take on too much in order to stay competitive at school and on college applications. Remind your child to take on a work load they can handle but that won't cause unhealthy habits in their life. Encourage short naps during the day that won't interfere with their bedtime. Help your teen turn their room into a space that encourages comfortable sleep. Keep their room quiet and dark so their sleep doesn't get interrupted regularly.
